Portrait of Max Little

Teaching since 2020

  • Bass
  • Music Theory

I am a professional double bass player and educator with an international performance pedigree, holding a Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Since 2022, I have maintained a prolific career as a full-time freelance musician and private tutor, currently holding residencies at several of Sydney’s premier music venues. Originally from London and raised in San Francisco, my musical foundation began with classical piano before I transitioned to the double bass in Year 6. My early development was shaped by the vibrant California jazz scene, leading to advanced studies at the California Jazz Conservatory (formerly Berkeley Jazz School). During this time, I honed my craft in elite small ensembles and big bands under the direction of Grammy-nominated educators such as Wayne Wallace. Following several years of performing across diverse musical settings in California, I relocated to Australia in 2017 to study under the renowned Craig Scott. Today, my professional output spans: • Performance: Extensive experience in symphony orchestras, Jazz Big Bands, and small jazz ensembles. • Accompaniment: Versatility in accompanying vocalists across musical theatre, pop, and jazz genres. • Specializations: Expertise in traditional New Orleans jazz, standard repertoire, and modern improvisation. As an educator, I leverage my real-world experience as a working musician to provide students with practical, high-level mentorship. While my recent teaching focus has been on private adult students, I am highly skilled in guiding pupils through audition preparation, ear training, and music theory. I bring a patient, passionate, and disciplined approach to the classroom, dedicated to helping students bridge the gap between technical theory and professional performance.
